Portfolio Allocation – What are The Choices?

There are different forms of investment. But how can we decide how much of each asset class must be purchased? In this article we will look at asset allocation and how to structure an investment portfolio. There is no set rule, but that would make it a good idea to write down all your investments in an Excel spreadsheet and see how they are distributed and what is your exposure to each asset class. The article is specific to Indian investors, although most of the ideas expressed are universal.

Importance of portfolio allocation

An investment portfolio can be composed of different asset classes like stocks, bonds, fixed deposits exist, the government’s savings plans [such as EPF, PPF or post office], precious metals, commodities, insurance products are savings or property. You can also get in touch with most of these asset classes for investment funds as well. Within each asset class, you have many possibilities, for example, in the capital may in large-cap or mid-cap or small-cap stocks to invest.
